A
bone density scan, called a Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry
or DXA scan, is used to measure the density of bones.
This test is currently the most accurate and reliable
means of assessing the strength of your bones and your
risk of breaking a bone. It is a simple, painless procedure
that uses very low doses of radiation. You will be asked
to lie down on the machine for 10-15 minutes whilst
an x-ray arm passes over you to take an image of your
spine and hip. A bone density scan can diagnose Osteoporosis,
assess your risk of breaking a bone and monitor the
effects of treatment.
Depending on your circumstances, a DXA
scan can cost around €100. You can, however, claim tax
relief for medical expenses. Click

to get more information and download Form Med 1. Those
with BUPA medical insurance can apply the cost of their
scan to their annual excess. Check your BUPA membership
handbook for details. Members of the VHI Healthsteps
schemes can also claim back part or all of the cost
of the scan. However, bone density scans
are not covered under any of VHI's hospital plans. Again,
check your membership handbook for details.
